- "The memories of traveling with you, and all other faint recollections... They compose me. You could call me his conscience."
- — A
A (Japanese: エイ, Ei) is a playable character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed. Masatsugu Saito, the lead character designer of the game, did the rough design, while the details were handled by Monolith Soft.
Overview
A travels together with Matthew, wielding a thin red sword. A is the type to make calm, calculated decisions, making for a good partner for Matthew, who tends not to think his actions through.[1]
A also tends to be logical to a detriment, often taking metaphors and phrases too literally, such as when A thought a rain of Brogs was going to happen when Matthew used it to poke fun at Glimmer warming up to him.
A is in fact a fragment of the Trinity Processor core Ontos, being born from his discarded "conscience" and retaining the memories of Ontos's time with Shulk as Alvis. Opposing Alpha's plans to create a new world at the expense of the people of Aionios, A seeks to stop him.
As revealed at the end of A Melody Sustained, A knows how to play the lute, and is willing to teach Glimmer on how to play her newly repaired lute, which she does sometimes while at Rest Spots.
Appearance
A has tan skin, silver hair, and dons a navy and black outfit with a lilac cape. A's Blade is the Monado, albeit in a previously unseen form. In contrast to the former appearance of Alvis, which is retained by the other part of Ontos, Alpha, A has waist-length hair and wears the Ontos core as an earring.
A also has a wing of light similar to the ones Zanza had upon his rebirth, which sometimes appears during battle.
Story
Creation
Following the recreation of the world of Bionis with Zanza's demise, Alvis returned to his Core Crystal, likely due to Klaus's death. Sometime after Shulk and Melia vanquished the Fog King from Alcamoth, Shulk came across the Ontos core on the shore of Colony 9.
When the worlds of Bionis and Alrest began to merge back into the original, Melia and Nia formed a plan to save the peoples and cultures of the worlds from destruction, constructing an ark known as Origin, which would contain all of their societies' knowledge and their citizens' literal souls, allowing them to be reborn after their worlds were reconstructed and then separated back into their original states. The Ontos Core was used as the foundation of Origin. However, this would lead to Ontos being reawakened at some point after Z hijacked Origin and created Aionios. As a result of Logos and Pneuma's absence, he reverted to being little more than a machine; As Alvis, he was able to maintain a personality solely through his absorbing of Klaus's lingering regrets, but as a result of Klaus's death, that personality was lost.
Now proclaiming himself as Alpha, he deemed the lives of the Kevesi and Agnian people unnecessary for the future, and sought to create a new future in which no traces of the old worlds would remain. Rex, Shulk, and Z attempted to stop him, but they were effortlessly defeated in a single attack from the Monado.
Over a decade later, Na'el stumbled across Ontos's core on the beach of Corne Island in Erythia Sea, and ended up being possessed by Alpha. Alpha then took many Citizens into Origin in the hopes of bringing them to a new world all the while the City was being destroyed by N. Due to the intervention from N and Ghondor, a fragment of Ontos that contained Alvis' discarded conscience and his memories of traveling with Shulk, was released from the chains of Ontos and manifested as A. After the City's destruction, A came across an injured Matthew, Na'el's brother, and helped him recover, before accompanying him on his travels to search for any City Survivors, including the missing Na'el.
Searching for Survivors
The duo eventually are attacked by a Moebius-like creature in Vermilion Woods, which Matthew defeats using his Ouroboros power. A then chastises Matthew for using his Ouroboros power so recklessly. They move through Vermilion Woods until their radar picks up a signal of a City Iris. They arrive too late, but hear sounds of fighting, and pursue the source. Upon arriving, they find Nikol, a Kevesi soldier, and Glimmer, an Agnian soldier, fighting. Matthew breaks up the fight, and two Consuls, Q and R, appear and fight A and Matthew. A kills both Moebius, and destroys both Flame Clocks on the Ferronises on the battlefield. Because Matthew used his Ouroboros power in range of Nikol and Glimmer, the two have now become Ouroboros. Nikol and Glimmer, now free from the Flame Clocks, are taken in by Matthew. However, Glimmer, unable to accept the fact that she is no longer an Agnian soldier, runs away in search of a colony. A, Matthew, and Nikol discover her to be gone the next morning, and proceed to go after her onto the Aurora Shelf.
Reunion with Shulk and Rex
The party eventually finds Glimmer and Shulk being attacked by Consul W and the Colony Eta Ferronis at the Diablada Cliffs, and they join forces to fight the Ferronis. Shulk asks who they are, before noticing Ontos's core on A, immediately realizing that A is Alvis. During the battle, W fuses himself with his two Ferronises, and fires a beam at Glimmer and Nikol, only for Rex to arrive and save them. After a long battle against W, Shulk, Rex, and Matthew attack W and his Ferronis simultaneously, destroying the Moebius.
The next morning, Rex and Shulk lead the group to Colony 9, the Liberators' base of operations. Upon arriving, the party is taken to their prepared quarters. Before resting, however, they go to meet Riku at his workshop. Afterwards, they return to their camp to rest up for the night.
After setting up camp by Raguel Lake, Shulk, Rex, and A have a discussion about Alpha and what he intends to do, with A explaining that A is the manifestation of Ontos's discarded conscience that was unshackled from Alpha due to N's power and Ghondor's dying act. When Shulk asks the reason for A's appearance, Rex explains as being due to the way the Trinity Processor was designed - Logos being the male persona, Pneuma being the female, and, as Rex describes it, Ontos being somewhere in between. A also explains how Alpha is inhabiting Na'el in the same way Zanza had once inhabited Shulk.
Their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of Na'el, inhabited by Alpha. The party fights Alpha until N shows up and fights Alpha himself. As N tries to finish Alpha off, Matthew's Ouroboros power activates and prevents N from killing Na'el. He attempts to attack N, but is stopped by A, who reveals that N is Matthew's great-grandfather. The party then explains to Matthew that as long as Alpha exists, Moebius is not the primary target, and that N is not their enemy. Alpha, suffering severe damage, leaves and tells the party she will be waiting. Prison Island then releases energy that causes Origin to appear above the Cent-Omnia Region.
The Origin of the Worlds
After returning to Colony 9, A, Rex, and Shulk inform Matthew, Glimmer, and Nikol about the origins of Aionios, telling them about how, originally, their worlds were one and the same. This world boasted almost unthinkable prosperity and was home to countless people. However, one man, Klaus, messed it all up and caused the world to be split into two separate places. One was the world of the Bionis, and the other was Alrest. The two divided worlds began to evolve independently of each other, giving birth to new life. However, it wasn't all peaceful, with there being tyrannic empires and conflicts over limited resources. But despite all that, thanks to numerous generations of people fighting for the future, the worlds were eventually able to attain harmony.
They then explain how the worlds began to return to how they once were. However, since they were composed of opposing types of matter, they would dissolve into light and cease to be when recombined. To escape destruction, the two worlds worked together to build Origin, a repository of data about everything, of memories and souls. Even if the worlds were annihilated, the Origin system would allow them to be revived. They explain how at the heart of Origin's workings is the Trinity Processor core, Ontos, or in other words, Alpha, and also how, Alpha had deemed the existence of all people from the two worlds obsolete and wanted to erase them. They then explain that Alpha is now gathering power and preparing to depart in the heart of Origin, called The Ark, alongside the new lives, those of City people, gathered there for the purpose of taking them to a new world.
Linka questions why Alpha would specifically choose Na'el to inhabit, to which Rex states its likely due to the fact that Na'el has Agnian ancestry and in terms of hereditary traits, Core Crystals get dominance. Rex theorizes that it is because Alpha got injured when they fought or that she has got whatever he is lacking. A then explains that Na'el's emotions also factor into it, likely being the most crucial element of all, with her feelings of anguish toward the world being the perfect fodder to Alpha. As a result, Na'el is a great deal more indispensable to Alpha than A is.
The party then discusses what to do next, determining that Prison Island would be their best bet of reaching Origin, where Alpha is waiting. After preparations are finished, the party leaves for the Black Mountains, where Prison Island is located. Along the way, Matthew points out that even though this is the first time he has seen Origin, it feels oddly familiar. A explains that his Gauntlets are made from Origin Metal, to which he expresses surprise.
Avatars of Origin
During the party's rest at the Valak Peak Camp, Shulk talks with A about how when he turned down the chance to be a god, he lost the power to have visions, while A still has that power. A tells him that he should know better than anyone that there is no single established future, and if A were to tell him what form Shulk's futures might one day take, it would be only one hazy possibility. A follows by saying that his will is what gives shape to his future. Shulk says A is right, and tells A that he does not enjoy getting old, as age saps his courage.
Soon after, the party finally arrives at the Prison Terrace. Shulk comments that it's just like old times, and A explains to him that back then, he and his friends embarked for Ontos's Memory Space from there, and how recreating it was deliberate on Alpha's part, allowing the party to board the Ark from there. They are greeted by N, who reveals that the one keeping Na'el in this world is Matthew, which is why N's been trying to kill him. The party confronts him, and N's clash with Matthew reveals to them a memory from Origin, of N's attack on the City and Alpha's involvement with it. All of a sudden, Alpha shows up and sends a ray of lighting at N, shocking him. Alpha's power emanates a fog which consumes the party.
The party finds themselves inside a memory from Origin, shortly before Klaus's experiment. The party looks around at the scenery of a house with a garden, with a view of a large city with tall buildings, with one tower reaching into the sky. Rex and Shulk confirm that this is a memory of Klaus's world, with A adding that only one being remains that can remember that time, being Alpha. The party then follows the sound of a piano, and finds Na'el, who tries to convince them that the world could be like this if they went through with Alpha's plan. A then shows Na'el the Land of Morytha, the aftermath of Klaus's experiment and what Alpha's proposed new world would ultimately become if his plan succeeded. Matthew persuades her that she would be no different from Moebius if she continued to view the Kevesi and Agnians as "things" unworthy of life, and that they could live like the people of the City if they were only allowed to choose it. Na'el agrees to join the party and stop Alpha, but not before Alpha regains control of her and disappears.
The party is then transported back to the Ark, where Alpha insists that the future has no need for the things of the past and that conscience is useless to the Trinity Processor. The party refuses to accept his goals, with Shulk and Rex recalling that Klaus trusted them with the future, and engage in combat with Alpha. After a while, Alpha tries to pull Matthew's soul in, but he resists and stays inside his body before N intervenes in the battle. Matthew expresses that for now, he is glad to have N at his side. Alpha unleashes his true form, that of a large humanoid figure with an empty, mask-like face. In a final effort to defeat Alpha, N grants Matthew the powers of his Sword of The End and instructs him to combine it with his Ouroboros Knuckles. Matthew's gauntlets begin to emit green energy, which A and Rex quickly recognize to be Pneuma's power. This grants the party the true power of Ouroboros, resulting in Alpha's demise.
A, Rex, and Shulk then begin to fade, and they reveal that without Alpha, Origin requires a new avatar to keep Aionios stable, which will be the three of them. The party expresses disagreement, but Rex assures the group that they will see them all again when the worlds are restored. Rex and Shulk grant their life force to their respective children, Glimmer and Nikol. A tells them that it is against the rules to do so, but agrees to look the other way after Rex says that Logos and Pneuma would not hesitate to do the same. The three of them then proceed to step forward into a large rift, telling the others that the three of them will be waiting for them at the far edge of time. As they enter the rift, Shulk and Rex ask A if they had foreseen the current turn of events, but A states that their hopes have always been a constant in the flow of time.
