The City (Japanese: シティー, Shitī) is a place in Xenoblade Chronicles 3.

Overview[]

The City is an Area of Swordmarch, accessible from the Great Sword's Hilt during Chapter 5. Later, it becomes a Region accessible from Farview Cape in Erythia Sea of the Cadensia Region. It is the home and base of operations of the Lost Numbers, the descendants of the first Ouroboros and the people they have freed from the Consuls' control.

Story[]

Hope's Rest City Ruins

The ruins of the first City

In the past, the City was once located in northern Erythia Sea. It was a fertile place that produced many crops. The Citizens that lived there used to call it "Hope's Rest". This version of the City was destroyed by N. Its survivors, including N's own great grandchildren, Matthew and Na'el, were scattered across Aionios, with many of the survivors ending up in Colony 9 under the care of Rex and Shulk, the leaders of the Liberators.

Na'el, having become the vessel of Alpha, tried to take all of the City survivors to a new world while destroying Aionios, deeming all life from Keves and Agnus obsolete. However, with help from N, Matthew was able to activate the true power of Ouroboros and vanquish Alpha. Afterwards, the development of a new City began in the Cadensia Region, with Matthew going on a journey, leaving the City in the hands of Na'el, Nikol, Glimmer, Panacea, Linka, and Riku. Eventually, the current City was fully rebuilt within the Great Sword's Hilt.

The City is ruled by six Houses, each of which claims descent from one of the six Founders. While Monica is its Elder and the leader of the City in theory, in practice the City's people are divided into various factions based on how they wish to handle the threat of Moebius. Some wish to withdraw from the outside world completely and focus solely on fortifying their home while leaving the people of Keves and Agnus to their fates, while others are willing to do anything to strike back at the Consuls regardless of how much collateral damage it might cause.

When Guernica Vandham encounters Noah and Mio's units in Alfeto Valley, he tells them that the "real enemy" is not Keves or Agnus, and advises them to reach Swordmarch. He tells them about the City before he passes away.

After making their way through Keves Castle, they escape towards the Cadensia Region, where they encounter a group of Lost Numbers led by Monica. They bring the party towards the Great Sword's Base, and into the City, where Monica gives the party a tour of their base. Realizing that they have the same goal, the party agrees to team up with the Lost Numbers on an expedition to free an imprisoned soldier named Ghondor, Monica's daughter, from Agnus Castle, and lend the party a ship named the Boundary to traverse the Erythia Sea.

After the party is imprisoned within Agnus Castle by N and its location is betrayed by Shania, the City is relocated to avoid getting hit by Agnus Castle's Annihilator, thanks to Mio warning Monica and Ghondor of her treachery. Its new location is in an enormous empty space directly beneath the bedrock of the shelf of land the Erythia Sea is located upon, 2000 metri below ground level, suspended a distance above the world's ocean even further below. From this point, the City can be accessed by talking to the Armory Pilot at Farview Cape in Erythia Sea.

During Side Story: Sena, Shania, now a Moebius, tries again to destroy the City to avenge her previous failures, but is stopped by the party and Ghondor.

After gathering enough Origin Metal, the party upgrades the Boundary into the Bravery, and heads towards Origin for the final battle.

Trivia[]

  • The City shares many similarities with Shevat from Xenogears. Both are located in cities that are found near the top of a tall structure, and can detach itself from that structure for the purpose of flight. Both Shevat and the City also fight against the oppressive forces of their worlds, and find themselves allying with the protagonists of their respective stories.
