Guernica Combat

Guernica in combat

Guernica's transport had been carrying an Ouroboros Stone to the City when it was shot down by Agnian forces, presumably at the Consuls' command. His soldiers and their automaton sentries were soon overwhelmed, and he was left the sole survivor. Upon seeing the battle between Noah, Lanz, Eunie, Mio, Sena, and Taion and recognizing Noah's sword, he tackles Noah and Mio to stop their fight and tells them that their real enemy lies elsewhere. Before he can elaborate on who is responsible for their endless war, he is attacked by a Mysterious Enemy that he refers to as "Moebius". Though he saves the party from the unknown enemy with the aid of a damaged Levnis, he is further wounded in the process of doing so; however, he has just enough strength left to activate the stone, granting the party the power of Ouroboros.

After the Mysterious Enemy retreats, he warns Noah, Mio, and their friends that Moebius will try to hunt them down wherever they go and that if they wish to survive they should go to "the land where the great sword stands", called Swordmarch, and seek out their City. He notices them marveling at his appearance and age, and tells them that humans were not supposed to live for only ten years. With his dying words, he encourages them to use their power to change their world and set things right. Once they left, someone went to look at his clothes and the Ouroboros stone.

His daughter Monica leads the Lost Numbers, and his granddaughter Ghondor fights as one of their soldiers. According to the people of the City, he was a skillful warrior who relinquished his place as one of the City's Elders to lead from the frontlines and was always ready to give up his life for the sake of humanity's future. Guernica was eventually given an off-seeing ceremony after Ouroboros retrieved his belongings and put them by the Remembrance Stones.

Trivia[]

  • Vangarre, the Colonel of Colony 9's Defence Force in Xenoblade Chronicles, shares Vandham's Japanese name. Both Vangarre and Vandham were in turn based on Vanderkam from Xenosaga, especially their drill sergeant-like personality and a tendency to call their subordinates "slackers", a tendency that Guernica lacked. Vanderkam was in turn based on a character of the same name from Xenogears.
  • He also shares his name with Commander Vandham from Xenoblade Chronicles X, as well as Vandham from Xenoblade Chronicles 2, all of them voiced by the same Japanese actor Tesshō Genda, who voiced Xord in Xenoblade Chronicles as well. Additionally, Guernica Vandham and the Vandham of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 are very similar visually, and share an English voice actor as well (Simon Thorp). Nia later remarks on her connection to the "Vandham" name during her Ascension Quest.
  • Guernica's name may be a reference to the Basque town Guernica in Spain and its significant history, in particular the murderous bombing of the town during the Spanish Civil War that was depicted by Pablo Picasso's painting "Guernica".
  • Guernica's death sequence is similar to that of Fiora and Vandham. Like Fiora, Guernica attacked an enemy with a machine, and like Vandham, Guernica gave a moral lecture while fending off the enemy.
