Lao is a Main Boss in Xenoblade Chronicles X. He is the final boss of the main storyline. He is fought at level 50 at the Lifehold Core's Interior.

Story

When the party travels to Lifehold Core during the last chapter of the plot, they are confronted by the Ganglion and their leader Luxaar aboard the Vita. The party battles Luxaar and defeats him, believing him to be dead. However, after Elma explains how the Core works, and the truth about their bodies, Luxaar is revealed to have survived the destruction of his Skell. He begins to destroy the Core, accidentally activating the Core's defense mechanism. This creates Chimeras to stop the one responsible for the damage, though at the same time going after everyone else inside.

Luxaar is ultimately defeated when Lao appears, and stabs him in the back with a long sword. While the Lifehold Core is initiating its final internal stage of defense, the floor with the destroyed Vita fall into the pool below, taking both of them to the protoplasm pool. Luxaar's body is disintegrating, resulting in his death and revealing that human DNA is capable of killing the Ganglion, hence their fear. Lao attempts to resurface, but the defense system recreates the final Chimera that absorbs Lao alive as the host. Various lifeforms, including Luxaar's remains as his face on Lao's left hand, inhabit the body as one being.

Upon emerging, the Chimera immediately begins to destroy the Lifehold Core, prompting the party to attack. Lin, however, attempts to defend Lao, but Lao then asks her to side with Elma, who believes there has been too much destruction for the survival of the humans, let alone that his deformed body is beyond his control. Lin does so reluctantly, and the party battles Lao.

Upon defeat, Lao mentions the ultimate motives for the Ganglion's actions before disintegrating. He is later found alive by a mysterious figure during the ending scene; his whereabouts are unknown afterwards.
