Nimue (Japanese: ナミ , Nami) is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. She was designed by Masatsugu Saito, the lead character designer of the game.

Overview[]

Nimue was Taion's strategy and tactics mentor when he lived in Colony Lambda. She cared deeply for him and believed that his kindness and strategic acumen would make him into a great strategist one day; she was also responsible for teaching Taion the ways of his Blade, Mondo. A failed plan forced her to sacrifice her life to save him, and Taion blamed his own recklessness for her death in its aftermath. Her dream was to see a Saffronia Tree in full bloom.

Story[]

Nimue was originally from a settlement known as the Lost Colony, which is surrounded by Saffonia trees. She had discovered and saved Isurd in the midst of a battle, and then took him back to Lost Colony nursed him back to health. The two became very close afterwards, Nimue took Isurd to see the Cradles in the Lost Colony, which is where the Lost Colony's soldiers are originated from, including Nimue herself. When Isurd eventually made to leave the Lost Colony and return to Colony Lambda, Nimue requested to go with him, as she wanted to experience the outside world.

Nimue's False Iris

False Iris used by Nimue

In order to keep the fact that she is not connected to a Flame Clock a secret, a false Iris is created for her that makes a cosmetic Flame Clock appear in her eye. She continues to reside in Colony Lambda until it is attacked by Colony 13, and she sacrificed herself to save Taion. As such, Isurd assumes Nimue might already reborn back to Lost Colony and tells Taion to protect it. However, he cannot go to Lost Colony with him because he does not want to see Nimue due to his guilt of unable to protect her during the Colony 13 ambush.

While on their way to the Lost Colony, Taion and his friends saved a group Lost Colony soldiers from a group of rogue Agnian Levnises. Taion happens to meet with reborn Nimue, looking like her younger self and lacking any of her previous memories; although she does retain her original wish to see the world outside of her Colony. Taion eventually convinces her to stay within the Lost Colony for the sake of protecting it, but expresses that there is "someone he'd like her to meet" someday.

Affinity[]

Etymology[]

The English name "Nimue" likely comes from the name used for a Lady of the Lake in Arthurian legend, who appeared in Le Morte d'Arthur as a student of Merlin who charms and traps him, and then replaced him as King Arthur's court magician.

The Japanese name "Nami" means "wave".

Trivia[]

  • There is an unused placeholder Chain Order portrait with Nimue's name on it in the files of Xenoblade Chronicles 3. This suggests she may have been at one point in development but was eventually scrapped.
  • Nimue and Ethel are the only two characters in Xenoblade Chronicles 3 to make their debut in their late term and then reappear in younger form.
