For those who have not completed games in the Xenoblade Chronicles series, this page contains spoilers regarding the plot. Discretion is advised.

The Queen of Keves is a character in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. She is the Masked Queen of Keves and rules this nation. She is later revealed to be a mechanical double of Melia used by the Consuls to maintain control over Keves, assuming her name and identity. She was designed by Masatsugu Saito, the lead character designer of the game.

Personality[]

Little is seen of the false Queen's personality, due to her limited screen time. However, she appears to act autonomously despite being a construct and a puppet for Moebius. She harbors animosity towards Agnus and its people, and is preoccupied with protecting "the world" as it exists, being the "endless now" perpetuated by the Consuls. To that end, she believes that the Ouroboros must be destroyed at all costs. She is hostile towards any Kevesi soldiers freed from her Flame Clocks, stating that those who do not suffer do not deserve to live -- a stark contrast from the true Queen's kindness and altruism. She also shows a degree of arrogance, as seen in her interactions with the Ouroboros where she continuously taunts them and treats them condescendingly. As heard in her in-battle quotes, she refers to herself as "Melia Antiqua", suggesting that she believes herself to be the true Melia.

As a robot, the false Queen is programmed to be completely obedient to the Consuls, acting of her own volition but being unable to challenge them in any way. This is shown in her complete cooperation with N in Chapter 4, but ultimately leads to her demise at the hands of Consul C, who unexpectedly betrays and destroys her -- something with which the Ouroboros had previously struggled.

Appearance[]

The false Queen of Keves is nearly identical in appearance to Melia in her royal dress, with some key differences. The first is the white porcelain mask that she wears, resembling the Empress Mask and being modeled after a stylized face with closed eyes. This mask hides the key physical feature that distinguishes her from her organic counterpart: her true face is a black, metallic robotic face resembling a snarling human skull, with glowing violet eyes. The staff she wields is also distinct from the World Ender wielded by the real Melia.

Story[]

After Z used Origin to create Aionios, he captured Melia, the Queen of Keves, and used her to gain access to Origin's functions and control the world. In her absence, Moebius created and installed a false Queen to assume Melia's throne and identity and to act as a mouthpiece for the Consuls. This doppelganger Queen was given the ability to use elemental ether magic similar to her template, as well as dominion over the cycle of reincarnation for Kevesi soldiers.

"Queen Melia" is first seen at the start of the game, in a flashback where she attends a Kevesi Homecoming Ceremony and honors the soldier as he passes on. She is next seen using the Cradles to create and age new Kevesi soldiers.

She's next seen after K's defeat, having been reported by I that Ouroboros are in Colony 4. She gives the order to all the colonies to destroy Ouroboros.

She is not seen again until Chapter 4, where she arranges a meeting with Ethel, where she threatened to destroy Colony 4 with the Annihilator, unless she joined up with Cammuravi to destroy the Ouroboros. After their failure to do so, she meets with the party in the Throne Room, accompanied by N who introduces her as "Melia Antiqua". The Queen sentences the Ouroboros to death and proceeds to face them in combat. She eventually sets up an impenetrable ether barrier to protect herself and uses Elemental Flare to charge up a massive fireball, forcing Noah to draw Lucky Seven despite the protests of his friends. However, before hero or tyrant has a chance to strike, the Queen malfunctions and her mask falls off, revealing that she is actually a mechanical double controlled by the Consuls; N accuses the true Queen of interference behind the scenes. X later claims that the duplicate was "toothless" compared to the one of the Queen of Agnus.

The false Queen reappears for the last time during Side Story: Noah, where she once again taunts the party, but is destroyed by Crys (as Consul C) before she can fight them again. Crys proceeds to use the Queen's throne as a small Ferronis in battle in an identical manner to her Agnian counterpart.

When the true Melia is rescued from her prison in Origin, she states that she was able to monitor the world through the eyes of her simulacrum; it is not revealed whether this was of her own volition or whether this was an intentional feature on Moebius' part.

Trivia[]

  • On the Affinity Chart, the false Queen of Keves is replaced with Melia herself after the latter is rescued from Origin; however, as they use the same model (with the mask added for the fake Queen), she can be seen wielding the false Queen's staff rather than the World Ender.
