TrinityProcessor

The Trinity Processor

The Trinity Processor is an element of the story of the Xenoblade Chronicles series.

Overview[]

The Trinity Processor is a collective of artificial intelligences that consists of three biocomputers: Ontos, Logos, and Pneuma. It is located near the Conduit on the First Low Orbit Station named Rhadamanthus. It was created by Aoidos, a research institution on Earth, as a way to maintain the Conduit. In order to achieve this, its cores were raised in virtual reality, which allowed them to obtain a personality necessary to control the Conduit. Logos was the male persona, and Pneuma was the female persona, while Ontos was intended to act as an arbiter between the other two, with a personality dependent by them.

Story[]

The Conduit's Activation[]

Trinity Missing Core

The missing core

The Trinity Processor was able to expand its own systems without the need for humans, creating the Artifices in the process as defense mechanisms meant to be wielded against those the Trinity Processor deemed a threat.[1] Klaus, one of the scientists on Rhadamanthus, activated the Conduit through the Trinity Processor, splitting the world in two separate ones, the world of Bionis and Mechonis and the world of Alrest, and causing almost all life on Earth to vanish, with Ontos, one of the cores, disappearing into another dimension along with Galea and half of Klaus' body, leaving the other half of Klaus with Logos and Pneuma.

Reworking The Cores[]

As atonement for his sins, the remaining Klaus, called the Architect, tried to recreate life in Alrest, and in the process created the Blades as a failsafe, for which he assigned the two remaining cores of the Trinity Processor, Logos and Pneuma, as the processing units for the data received from their Core Crystals.

Meanwhile, Ontos, Zanza, who was born from the other half of Klaus' body, and Meyneth, born from Galea's body, ended up in the world of the Bionis and Mechonis. At some point after this world was born, Ontos awakened as Alvis. Due to the absence of Logos and Pneuma, Alvis formed a personality solely through absorbing Klaus' lingering regrets. Eventually, Alvis became one of Zanza's disciples along with Dickson and Lorithia. Around this time, Alvis created the Monados, weapons that grant their wielders the abilities of a god, as well as Ontos's power to see the future, and granted Monados to both Zanza and Meyneth. Eventually, Zanza's soul inhabited his Monado and was locked in Ose Tower after the battle between the Bionis and Mechonis.

AddamDriver

Addam becomes Mythra's Driver

Thousands of years later in Alrest, Amalthus arrived to Rhadamanthus after climbing the World Tree. There, he took Logos and Pneuma, without Klaus' interference, and brought them back to Alrest. Upon his return, Amalthus resonated with Logos, awakening it as Malos.

Due to his Driver's hatred of mankind and the world, Malos desired to destroy all of humanity and began causing destruction across the world. He later claimed the title of "The Aegis" for himself. However, Malos eventually left Amalthus to achieve their goal alone. In response, Amalthus sought out someone capable of resonating with Pneuma, with Addam Origo eventually accepting the task, awakening Pneuma as Mythra, and starting the Aegis War.

After the Aegis War, Mythra seals herself away within her mind, creating Pyra, and Addam seals her in a ship beneath the Cloud Sea. Meanwhile, Malos's core crystal was significantly damaged. Sometime later, Malos returns and, together with Jin, forms the terrorist organization known as Torna with the goal of climbing the World Tree to kill the Architect. In order to do so, they need to find Mythra and take energy from her core crystal to restore his damaged core.

Reawakening of the Aegis[]

XC2-Rex-and-Pyra

Rex meets Pyra

Torna eventually hires Rex to help get them past the seal that can only be opened by a Leftherian. When Rex discovers Pyra, he inadvertently touches Pyra's sword, becoming her Driver, and is slain by Jin in response. Meeting in Pyra's dream of Elysium, Pyra offers to revive Rex by giving him half of her Core Crystal in exchange for him taking her to the real Elysium. Once Rex is revived, the two combat Malos and, with help from Nia and Dromarch, eventually escape.

Later, at the Olethro Playhouse, Mythra reawakens in order to save Rex from being killed by Malos. Pyra and Mythra, who consider themselves to be sisters, regularly switch places with each other to provide Rex with further support.

After the party is defeated by Jin at the Genbu Crown in the Kingdom of Tantal, Pyra lets herself be taken in order to get Jin to spare everyone's lives. Torna takes her to the Cliffs of Morytha, where Malos steals data from her core to repair his own.

Pneuma's True Power[]

After Rex's injuries recover, Azurda leads the party in the Spirit Crucible Elpys, the place where Addam sealed Pneuma's Aegis Sword. Thanks to Rex's half of Pneuma's core, the party is able to find the sword. When Rex picks it up, the sword shows him a glimpse of the Conduit's activation. He then learns that Pyra is at the Cliffs of Morytha and heads there to save her.

PneumaAwaken

Pneuma's true power awakens

The party eventually confronts Jin and Malos at the Gotrock Oracle Ruins, where Malos hands over an unconscious Pyra. Rex and the party attempt to fight the duo, though Pyra and Mythra beg Rex to give up and reach Elysium without them. Rex refuses to break his promise and reassures them that together, they can find their place in the world. This causes Rex to become the Master Driver and summon the third Aegis Sword, while Pyra reawakens and takes on a new form with long, green hair and a silver outfit. Pneuma's power allows her and Rex to match speeds with Jin and easily take him down. Malos then summons Ophion, and Pneuma summons Siren in response. A battle between the Artifices destroys the cliff and sends the party and Jin beneath the Cloud Sea to the Land of Morytha.

Elysium[]

Malos is the first to reach Elysium and meet the Architect, who reveals Malos's original name to be Logos. The Architect tells Malos that he is already dying, which causes Malos to spare his life and instead activate Artifice Aion, to which the Architect does not object.

PneumaRex

Rex and Pneuma prepare to Battle Artifice Aion

As the party meets the Architect, he reveals Pyra and Mythra's original name to be Pneuma. He reveals that upon seeing that the humans on Alrest were no different from the past, he lost faith in the world. For this reason, he did not stop Amalthus from taking Pneuma and Logos back to Alrest. However, he reveals a change of heart after seeing the unique bond between Rex and Pneuma and gives Pneuma all of Elysium's authorizations. He explains that the Aegises draw their power from the Conduit and that with his other half's death, the Conduit will disappear, leaving Pneuma powerless. The party then goes to stop Malos.

InfinityBladeFinisher

Pneuma and Rex finishes off Malos

Rex and Pneuma are able to defeat Artifice Aion and Malos by directing a beam of Siren's particle cannon into the Aegis Sword. The attack damages Malos's Core Crystal, and he soon dies. The Architect then begins to disappear, due to the death of his other half, which causes the Conduit to vanish into an unknown dimension. With the Conduit's disappearance, the space elevator begins to break apart, meaning the World Tree would collapse onto Alrest. Pneuma tells the party that a control room that could activate rocket boosters to prevent this.

PyraMythraWhole

Pyra and Mythra's Return

This ends up being a ruse; Pneuma must use the last of Artifice Aion's power to destroy the World Tree. She convinces Poppi to not help Rex come with her and gives her Core Crystal to Rex so that he may live on. She also allows Azurda to return to his Titan form so that the party may survive the journey back to Alrest. As the party escapes, she reactivates Aion and is seemingly killed in the explosion, but not before thanking Rex for having a major presence in her life. However, Rex is able to reawaken Pneuma's Core Crystal, reuniting with Pyra and Mythra, now living in separate bodies.

Xenoblade Chronicles[]

The Heir to the Monado[]

Shulk with Monado 1

Shulk becomes the wielder of the Monado

Around the same time that Rex meets Pyra, Shulk, a Homs dedicated to researching the Monado, becomes the sword's wielder when his home of Colony 9 is attacked by Mechon, as the Monado is the only weapon capable of destroying Mechon. In the process, he is also granted Ontos's power to see the future. During his travels up the Bionis, Alvis watches over Shulk and his friends, even helping them damage Metal Face at one point.

When Shulk gathers Ether Crystals to help an unconscious Melia, he meets Alvis. The two are attacked by Telethia, which Shulk is able to defeat after Alvis tells him how to truly wield the sword after using the sword to teach Shulk a new power of the Monado. Before Shulk is able to ask how Alvis is able to use the Monado, Alvis disappears.

After the party is arrested in Alcamoth, Alvis clears them of any suspicion. Alvis reveals that he is a seer for the High Entia emperor. Alvis later leads the party to the High Entia Tomb to save Melia. After the Monado's power is unshackled, Alvis guides the party through Valak Mountain until they arrive in Sword Valley.

The True Monado[]

Shulk Memory Space

Alvis talks with Shulk in Ontos's Memory Space

When Shulk falls unconscious after the party is protected by Meyneth from Gadolt's blast at the top of Mechonis Field, Shulk finds himself in Ontos's Memory Space, where he hears Alvis' voice asking him why he wants to change the future. Alvis tells Shulk that if he wishes to defy fate, then he must find his Monado, and Shulk falls into a dream.

After Shulk is seemingly killed by Dickson and Zanza released at Mechonis Core, Shulk's consciousness returns to Ontos's memory space. Shulk questions the meaning of his life, but then Alvis appears. Alvis tells Shulk about Zanza's motives, and that Shulk still has the freedom to decide his own fate. Shulk's consciousness leaves Memory Space and returns to his own body.

After the party defeats Dickson on Prison Island, they find themselves in Ontos's memory space, where Zanza awaits them. Zanza is disturbed by the defeat of his disciples, and the fact that his visions end right after the point in the future where the party confronts Zanza, despite him now possessing both his and Meyneth's Monados. At the same time Rex and Pneuma's party confront Malos and fight against Artifice Aion in Alrest, Shulk and his party confront Zanza and fight against him. After a while, Shulk states that he will decide his own future, which results in Shulk unlocking the power of the True Monado. Shulk's True Monado, possessing the power to kill gods, is used by Shulk to finish off Zanza, which causes the death of the Architect and the disappearance of the Conduit. Alvis then reveals that he is the embodiment of the Monado, and the fabric of reality. He tells Shulk that he can decide the fate of the universe now that he possesses the sword's full power. Shulk decides to create a world with no need for gods, refusing to become a god and giving up both his Monado and his power to see the future in the process. The world of the Bionis is recreated and Alvis disappears.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3: Future Redeemed[]

The Foundation of Origin[]

Shulk Holding Ontos

Shulk finds Ontos's Core

Some time after Alcamoth was reclaimed from the Fog King, Shulk came across Ontos's core on the shore of Colony 9. In addition, Pyra and Mythra ended up giving birth to children, with Rex and Pyra's daughter being named Glimmer. When the two worlds began the process of recombining, an event which would cancel out both worlds and destroy them, Melia and Nia came into contact and began constructing Origin in order to save their worlds from destruction. At the foundation of Origin was the Ontos core. However, when the time came for Origin to activate, it failed to do so and instead, due to being seized by Z, caused both worlds to be frozen in time, creating a third one, Aionios. During the final fight against Alpha, it is revealed that both Mythra's and Pyra's souls are within Matthew's Ouroboros Knuckles, while Logos is within Consul N's Sword of the End.

Shulk Rex Fighting Alpha

Shulk and Rex confront Alpha

At some point later, Ontos reawakened. As a result of Logos and Pneuma's absence and Klaus's death, he reverted to being little more than a machine. Now proclaiming himself as Alpha, he deemed the lives of the Kevesi and Agnian people unnecessary for the future, and sought to create a new future in which no traces of the old worlds would remain. Rex, Shulk, and Z attempted to stop him, but they were effortlessly defeated in a single strike from the Monado.

Over a decade later, Na'el comes across Ontos's core on the beach of Corne Island in Erythia Sea, and becomes the vessel of Alpha in the same way that Zanza once did with Shulk and seizes control of Origin to turn it into his "Ark". Alpha then took many Citizens into Origin in the hopes of bringing them to a new world all the while the City was being destroyed by N. Due to the intervention from N and Ghondor, a fragment of Alpha that contained Alvis' consciousness and his memories of traveling across the Bionis with Shulk, was released from the chains of Ontos and manifested as a being known as A. After the City's destruction, A came across an injured Matthew, Na'el's brother, and helped him recover, before accompanying him on his travels to search for any City Survivors, including the missing Na'el.

Rex, Shulk, and A[]

After chasing after Glimmer, Matthew, A, and Nikol find Glimmer and Shulk being attacked by Consul W and the Colony Eta Ferronis at the Diablada Cliffs, and they join forces to fight the Ferronis. Shulk asks who they are, before noticing Ontos's core on A, immediately realizing who A is. During the battle, W fuses himself with his two Ferronises, and fires a beam at Glimmer and Nikol, only for Rex to arrive and save them. After a long battle against W, Shulk, Rex, and Matthew attack W and his Ferronis simultaneously, destroying the Moebius.

A Rex Shulk

A, Shulk, and Rex

After setting up camp by Raguel Lake, Shulk, Rex, and A have a discussion about Alpha and what he intends to do, with A explaining that they are the manifestation of Ontos's discarded conscience that was unshackled from Alpha due to N's power and Ghondor's dying act. When Shulk asks the reason for A's appearance, Rex explains as being due to the way the Trinity Processor was designed - Logos being the male persona, Pneuma being the female, and, as Rex describes it, Ontos being somewhere in between. A also explains how Alpha is inhabiting Na'el in the same way Zanza had once inhabited Shulk.

Their conversation is interrupted by the appearance of Na'el, inhabited by Alpha. The party fights Alpha until N shows up and fights Alpha himself. As N tries to finish Alpha off, Matthew's Ouroboros power activates and prevents N from killing Na'el. He attempts to attack N, but is stopped by A, who reveals that N is Matthew's great-grandfather. The party then explains to Matthew that as long as Alpha exists, Moebius is not the primary target, and that N is not their enemy. Alpha, suffering severe damage, leaves and tells the party she will be waiting. Prison Island then releases energy that causes Origin to appear above the Cent-Omnia Region.

The Origin of the Worlds[]

After returning to Colony 9, A, Rex, and Shulk inform Matthew, Glimmer, and Nikol about the origins of Aionios, telling them about how, originally, their worlds were one and the same. This world boasted almost unthinkable prosperity and was home to countless people. However, one man, Klaus, messed it all up and caused the world to be split into two separate places. One was the world of the Bionis, and the other was Alrest. The two divided worlds began to evolve independently of each other, giving birth to new life. However, it wasn't all peaceful, with there being tyrannic empires and conflicts over limited resources. But despite all that, thanks to numerous generations of people fighting for the future, the worlds were eventually able to attain harmony.

They then explain how the worlds began to return to how they once were. However, since they were composed of opposing types of matter, they would dissolve into light and cease to be when recombined. To escape destruction, the two worlds worked together to build Origin, a repository of data about everything, of memories and souls. Even if the worlds were annihilated, the Origin system would allow them to be revived. They explain how at the heart of Origin's workings is the Trinity Processor core, Ontos, or in other words, Alpha, and also how, Alpha had deemed the existence of all people from the two worlds obsolete and wanted to erase them. They then explain that Alpha is now gathering power and preparing to depart in the heart of Origin, called The Ark, alongside the new lives, those of City people, gathered there for the purpose of taking them to a new world.

Linka questions why Alpha would specifically choose Na'el to inhabit, to which Rex states its likely due to the fact that Na'el has Agnian ancestry and in terms of hereditary traits, Core Crystals get dominance. Rex theorizes that it's because Alpha got injured when they fought or that she's got whatever he's lacking. A then explains that Na'el's emotions also factor into it, likely being the most crucial element of all, with her feelings of anguish toward the world being the perfect fodder to Alpha. As a result, Na'el is a great deal more indispensable to Alpha than A is.

The party then discusses what to do next, determining that Prison Island would be their best bet of reaching Origin, where Alpha is waiting. After preparations are finished, the party leaves for the Black Mountains, where Prison Island is located.

Avatars of Origin[]

During the party's rest at the Valak Peak Camp, Shulk talks with A about how when he turned down the chance to be a god, he lost the power to have visions, while A still has that power. A tells him that he should know better than anyone that there is no single established future, and if A were to tell him what form Shulk's futures might one day take, it would be only one hazy possibility. A follows by saying that his will is what gives shape to his future.

Soon after, the party finally arrives at the Prison Terrace. Shulk comments that it's just like old times, and A explains to him that back then, he and his friends embarked for Ontos's memory space from there, and how recreating it was deliberate on Alpha's part, allowing the party to board the Ark from there. They are greeted by N, who reveals that the one keeping Na'el in this world is Matthew, which is why N's been trying to kill him. The party confronts him, and N's clash with Matthew reveals to them a memory from Origin, of N's attack on the City and Alpha's involvement with it. All of a sudden, Alpha shows up and sends a ray of lighting at N, shocking him. Alpha's power emanates a fog which consumes the party.

Alpha Final Form

Alpha's true form

The party finds themselves inside a memory from Origin, shortly before Klaus's experiment. The party looks around at the scenery of a house with a garden, with a view of a large city with tall buildings, with one tower reaching into the sky. Rex and Shulk confirm that this is a memory of Klaus's world, with A adding that only one being remains that can remember that time, being Alpha. The party then follows the sound of a piano, and finds Na'el, who tries to convince them that the world could be like this if they went through with Alpha's plan. A then shows Na'el the Land of Morytha, the aftermath of Klaus' experiment and what Alpha's proposed new world would ultimately become if his plan succeeded. Matthew persuades her that she would be no different from Moebius if she continued to view the Kevesi and Agnians as "things" unworthy of life, and that they could live like the people of the City if they were only allowed to choose it. Na'el agrees to join the party and stop Alpha, but not before Alpha regains control of her and disappears.

Ouroboros Gauntlet Pneuma Core

Pneuma's Core appearing within the Gauntlet

The party is then transported back to the Ark, where Alpha insists that the future has no need for the things of the past and that conscience is useless to the Trinity Processor. The party refuses to accept his goals, with Shulk and Rex recalling that Klaus trusted them with the future, and engage in combat with Alpha. After a while, Alpha tries to pull Matthew's soul in, but he resists and stays inside his body before N intervenes in the battle. Matthew expresses that for now, he's glad to have N at his side. Alpha unleashes his true form, that of a large humanoid figure with an empty, mask-like face. In a final effort to defeat Alpha, N grants Matthew the powers of his Sword of The End by unleashing a wave of green energy and instructs him to combine it with his Ouroboros Knuckles. Matthew's gauntlets begin to emit green energy, which A and Rex quickly recognize to be Pneuma's power. As Matthew activates his Ouroboros powers, his gauntlets open up, and Pneuma's core appears within it, and the party achieves the full Ouroboros transformation, resulting in Alpha's demise.

Origin's New Avatars

A, Rex, and Shulk become Origin's new avatars

A, Rex, and Shulk then begin to fade, and they reveal that without Alpha, Origin requires a new avatar to keep Aionios stable, which will be the three of them. The party expresses disagreement, but Rex assures the group that they will see them all again when the worlds are restored. Rex and Shulk grant their life force to their respective children, Glimmer and Nikol. A tells them that it is against the rules to do so, but agrees to look the other way after Rex says that "they" would not hesitate to do the same. The three of them then proceed to step forward into a large rift, telling the others that the three of them will be waiting for them at the far edge of time. As they enter the rift, Shulk and Rex ask A if they had foreseen the current turn of events, but A states that their hopes have always been a constant in the flow of time.

Etymology[]

The name Ontos derives from ancient the Greek word ὄντος, meaning "one who is" or "being." The original Japanese name, Ousia, comes from the Greek word οὐσία, meaning "being" or "essence." Logos comes from the Greek word λόγος, meaning "speech" and "reason." Pneuma comes from the Greek word πνεῦμα, meaning "breath" and "spirit."

Trivia[]

Pneumawriting

Pneuma's verse texture

  • Each of the three biocomputers represents a part of the Holy Trinity. In Christology, Logos is a name or title of Jesus Christ, the Son. Ousia, in gnosticism, refers to the essence of God, the Father. Similarly, Ontos (or "ontology") can be related to the existence of God. Pneuma, in a religious context, is often understood to be the Holy Spirit.
  • Each processor has its own bible verse from the Book of Proverbs inscribed on them in Latin, right below their names in Greek. They are 3:13 for Ontos, 10:12 for Logos and 4:18 for Pneuma, which is also written on her chest.[2]
  • The structure of the Trinity Processor parallels Kadomony from Xenogears.
